      Find Of the Month

      Charles 1st Shilling

Charles I was the last King to rule the three kingdoms (England, Scotland and Ireland) before the monarchy was abolished and the Commonwealth of England was formed.

During his reign he had a strained relationship with Parliament and ruled from 1629 - 1640 without it - often referred to as his "eleven years tyranny". This period eventually led to the English Civil War and Charles' imprisonment.

During captivity, Charles formed a secret treaty with Scotland which would have them invade England and restore him as King. The Second English Civil War cumulated in Parliamentarian victory and Charles was sentenced to death for treason. He is the only English King to be executed.

      Mary & Phil

This amazing find came from an area that I have been focusing my attention on for a couple of years. It amazes me still to this day how much hsitory lies in the most innocuous of fields. I often have to remind myself how our landscapes have evolved over time and what seems to be a quiet field today could have been so different then.

This silver hammered shilling is 1554 Mary 1st. facing Husband Philip11 of Spain. The first Royal bust pairing.

Mary daughter of Henry V111 and Catherine of Aragon known as 'Bloody Mary' took the thrown for only 4 year's and she attempted to reverse the reformation and restore Catholicism.

She died in 1558 and was succeeded by her sister Elizabeth 1st.
